Just before our Independence, Bhaikaka and Bhikhabhai, the founding fathers of this
campus had a dream. It was to use Education as an instrument for rural change. They
therefore set up an educational township with active participation of the people,
as an enduring model for Free India. This dream was blessed by two great sons of
Mother India: Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel.
In 1945, the founding fathers registered a Public Charitable Trust: the Charutar
Vidya Madal, (the Parent Body of this Institute) and in the tradition of
Takshashila and Nalanda, they laid the foundation of a unique township, which was
inaugurated by India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
In 1948, Lord Mountbatten, British India’s last viceroy inaugurated the state’s
first college of Engineering, for which Shri Ghanshyamdas Birla generously donated
Rs. 2.5 million.
And in 1950, India’s first President, Dr.Rajendra Prasad inaugurated a college named
B.J. Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, a full fledged commerce college.
Between 1958 and 1993, Dr. H.M.Patel the then Chairman of the Charutar Vidya Mandal,
established many Institutions adding contemporary elegance of Oxford and Cambridge
to the tradition of Takshashila and Nalanda.
Since 1994, the present Chairman of the Charutar Viday Mandal, Dr. C.L.Patel, has
carried out extensive renovations, updated all land records of the trust, set up
several self-financed colleges and introduced many pioneering courses which seek
to maintain international standards. In appreciation of his invaluable services,
Shri C.L. Patel Saheb has been awarded the ‘Charotar Ratna’ and a D.Litt has also
been conferred upon him. Moreover under his Chairmanship, a sister campus, New Vallabh
Vidyanagar has come into being as a satellite township.
The once thickly wooded ravine sans inhabitants now houses over 30000 students from
all across India and overseas, enrolled at 45 institutions from the kindergarten
to the Post Graduate levels.
The environment of this campus, pleasing architecture, lush greenery, ultra-modern
equipment, high-end courses, 2800 computers with intranet and internet, a large
yet non-polluting Industrial Area, over 3500 Faculty members, substantial resident
population: all gloriously prove the prophecy of our Nation’s founding fathers:
“Strong Villages a Strong Nation Make.”
The educational township grew so rapidly that in 1955, a demand for a university
arose which could cater to the needs of the rural society at large. The university
did come into being and it was named after the iron man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel. In the initial phase the university did without any Government funding but
today it is one of the well- known university townships in India. Over the last
five decades the campus has seen phenomenal growth under the leadership of the duo
- Dr. H. M. Patel and Dr. C.L.Patel.
As a result of the dedicated efforts of these great leaders, we have established
a tradition of creating new courses responding to the needs of the community and
in keeping with our national aspirations.
