This institute is one of the few outstanding educational hubs where undergraduate and post graduate programmes are offered in English Language and Literature in keeping with international standard of Excellence.

Today the institute serves as the Institution of Advanced Studies in Education (English).

The institute has designed and published numerous print material, multi-media packages, audio and video material and teaching aids. It merits special mention that the efforts to teach English in rural and tribal areas have been going on for the last several years and that eighteen scholars from this institute have been awarded Ph.D. Degree in English Language Teaching under the Faculty of Education and Arts, Sardar Patel University.

Within the areas of its competence the institute has lent academic support to numerous national and

state organizations and Cambridge University, UK.

It is noteworthy that the institute is one of the few in our country that have been entrusted by the Ministry for Human Resource Development to conduct in service training programmes for teachers and teacher-educators and that the EFL University, Hyderabad recognises it as a centre to undertake research in English.

Inception

Noticing that a majority of teachers teaching English in the early 60's did not have English as their subject of specialization, the Founder of this institute Shri H. M. Patel decided to do something about it. During his 60th birthday celebrations in 1964 Shri H. M. Patel was presented a purse by his friends and well-wishers and he decided to use a major part of it for the establishment of this Institute with the primary objective of preparing a cadre of well-trained teachers of English.

Governance

The Institute is now being managed by its Board of

Governors consisting of 19 members, 10 ex-officio and the others nominated by the respective State Governments in the Region (Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan) including the Vice Chancellor, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad and Jt. Secretary, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi. Shri H. M. Patel, Founder of the Institute, was its Chairman (1965-1993). At present Dr. C. L. Patel, a distinguished educationist is its Chairman.

All academic, administrative and financial authority pertaining to the Institute vests with the Board. The Board also has the right to co-opt any other member who they deem fit.
