On our own initiative the Institute undertook and continues to do so a variety of
teaching and training programmes for teachers of English at primary and secondary
levels, primary teacher trainers, secondary teacher trainers, education, officers,
school headmasters, college teachers, Govt. Class I & II officers, management trainees
in various industries including national institutions and organizations.
Over the years this Institute has trained more than 7,500 B. Ed. (English), 300
M. Ed. English teachers of English; 400 M. A. (ELT) students, 100 M.A. (English)
students and 4000 resource
personnel for in-service training of
different cadres under various schemes, produced various materials like syllabuses,
textbooks, teachers handbooks, audio-visual materials, radio lessons, video lessons
and training materials useful to learners and teachers of English as well as teacher
educators.
The Institute is now upgraded to
Function as an Institution of Advanced Studies in Education (English) under the
centrally sponsored scheme. As a result of this, the Institute will now carry out
responsibilities of curriculum development and preparation of resource persons for
Colleges of Teacher Education in the region. The Institute caters to the needs of
the four states in the Western Region mainly in terms of
a) Establishing liaison with the respective State Institutes of English / District
Centres;
b) Undertaking a variety of in¬service training and orientation programmes for ELT
personnel in the Colleges of Teacher Education as well as the supervisory staff,
script writers, materials producers, and senior teachers of English.
c) Preparing and supplying teaching materials to institutions.
d) A P ply in geducation a I technology to the needs of language instruction and
producing both audio as well as video materials along with making use of computer
aided instruction and
e) Offering consultancy services in terms of syllabus curriculum development, course
design and textbook production along with preparing Teacher's Manuals and establishing
language laboratories and setting up of Human Resource Development Centers.
